“Have a vision. Be demanding.”

– Colin Powell

Question...

What do you see..?

...What is your intuition telling you?

Pause right here for a moment:

...take a deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... calm your mind and be present...

Colin Luther Powell is an American politician and retired four-star general in the United States Army.

During his military career, Powell also served as National Security Advisor (1987–1989), as Commander of the U.S. Army Forces Command (1989) and as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989–1993), holding the latter position during the Persian Gulf War.

Powell was the first, and so far the only, Jamaican American to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was the 65th United States Secretary of State, serving under U.S. President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2005, the first black person to serve in that position.

Powell was a professional soldier for 35 years, during which time he held many command and staff positions and rose to the rank of 4-star General. His last assignment, from October 1, 1989, to September 30, 1993, was as the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest military position in the Department of Defense. During this time, he oversaw 28 crises, including Operation Desert Storm in the 1991 Persian Gulf War. He also formulated the Powell Doctrine.

Moreover, Powell is the recipient of numerous U.S. and foreign military awards and decorations. His civilian awards include the Presidential Medal of Freedom (twice), the President's Citizens Medal, the Congressional Gold Medal, the Secretary of State Distinguished Service Medal, and the Secretary of Energy Distinguished Service Medal.

Colin Powell's career successes are well documented. What I presented above represents just a few highlights. I'm sure you would agree, Powell's Leadership, especially in the military, confirms he not only has exceptional intuition, but he listens to it.

The Law of Intuition is number 8 in Maxwell's 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. It explains:

  • Leadership intuition separates the greatest leaders from the ones who are merely good.

  • Leaders see everything with leadership bias, and as a result they instinctively know what to do.

  • Everyone is capable of developing a degree of leadership intuition. No one starts at the same place.

Leaders,

How's your intuition?

...think about it for a moment...

To give you a different perspective, consider these questions:

Do you understand your culture? ...its trends, ...its myths, ...its strengths, ...its dangers...

...spend a moment here...

Do you understand the age in which you’re living in? ...its tenor and general movement?

...we assume we know... understand... but have you spent any time thinking about it...

Do you have a strategy to grapple with both the culture and the times?

...What's your plan...

I challenge you to dig past the surface and explore these questions... Share with others and start a conversation... Be intentional and watch what happens.

You got this!
