"In life's curriculum, discernment is the opposite of judgement. Through judgement a man reveals what he needs to confront and learn... Through discernment, one reveals what he has mastered."
-Glenda Green, Artist/Author
Good Morning Leaders,
How important is discernment to you?
Think about that for a moment...
Discernment- the quality of being able to grasp and comprehend what is obscure.
On a scale of 1 - 10, how would you rate your ability to discern?
Sit with that for a moment... be honest with yourself.
Mastering the art of discernment is not easy. It takes courage, and practice.
Traits of a Discerning Leader: (Inspired by John C Maxwell)
1. Good Listener- It's not hard to hear or understand a person... can you listen without bias..?
2. Intuitive- using what one feels to be true even without conscious reasoning... sensing things about people and the surroundings that are not readily evident.
3. Well networked- What resources do you have available? How tight is your circle? Who are your mentor's... go to person...? Who do you trust, where do you go when you need help?
4. Flexible- willing and able to change and adapt to different circumstances.
5. Optimistic- hopeful and confident about the future.
6. Perceptive- having sensitive insight,.. observant... sympathetic understanding
"...Discernment means not only distinguishing right from wrong; it means distinguishing the primary from the secondary, the essential from the indifferent, the permanent from the transient..."
Discernment means distinguishing between the good and the better, and even between the better and the best.
As leaders, (and we are all leaders) it is up to us to be competent in our craft... open to learning, and knowing for ourselves.
