“As more and more artificial intelligence is entering into the world, more and more emotional intelligence must enter into leadership.”
-Amit Ray, (Mindfullness Meditation for Corporate Leadership)
How’s your Emotional Intelligence (EQ)?
Emotional Intelligence is something we don't hear about these days but the term use to be quite popular... In the present days of technology, computers, cellphones, texting, Alexa , graphic video games, we seem to be loosing our ability to communicate. Kids don't play outside anymore... depression, suicide rates on the rise, gun violence, and the headlines involving school shootings don't surprise us anymore...
How is this resonating with you?
Consider pressing the reset button and changing the narrative.
Emotional intelligence is a concept researchers came up with in the 1980s to explain why intelligent people often do really stupid things. The argument went, that the same way your general intelligence (IQ) is a measurement of your ability to process information and come to sound decisions, your emotional intelligence (EQ) is your ability to process emotions—both others’ and your own—and come to sound decisions. (Mark Manson, Author, personnal development consultant)
How important is Emotional Intelligence in leadership?
Forbes Coaches Council stated that while EQ is a skill often overlooked, it is crucial ones success as a leader.
Here is what Emotional Intelligence Provides Leaders:
Acute Awareness: Leaders who have emotional intelligence are more likely to realize when pride and other emotions are influencing their thinking, allowing them to make more rational, impartial choices.
Impact Interpretation: Emotional intelligence makes it easier to anticipate and respond to others' sentiments. Leaders with emotional intelligence can tell ahead of time how others will react and develop a strategy to keep them grounded.
Mental Health Management: Leaders with strong emotional intelligence have an easier time assessing the emotional and psychological state of their employees, (i.e. If someone is suffering from anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, eating disorders). This promotes a more productive and harmonious work environment and more importantly, the opportunity to provide employees with the proper support.
Cultivated Communication: Leaders with emotional intelligence have an improved ability to gauge others' responses to their words and actions. ... Do they really understand, or are they confuse and unwilling to say so..? It also makes it easier to listen to what others say clearly, without judgement, ensuring that others are comfortable giving you the information you need.
Helpful Humor: If you have emotional intelligence it will be easier to tell what people will find funny and also determine in which situations humor will be appropriate,..finding the proper balance between serious work and lightheartedness. Never underestimate the value of humor.
