“The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between, the leader is a servant"

—Max DePree

How do the words above resonate with you?

Pause here for a moment and free yourself from distractions:

Take a deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... calm your mind and be present...

What is your definition of Servant Leadership? Kindly come up with an answer before you read further...

Whatis.com explains Servant Leadership this way:

Servant leadership is a leadership philosophy built on the belief that the most effective leaders strive to serve others, rather than accrue power or take control. The aforementioned others can include customers, partners, fellow employees and the community at large.

We are all leaders in some form or fashion.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate your practice of Servant Leadership? Sit with that thought for a moment... Take time to reflect...

Self improvement never ends. It remains an ongoing continuous process. Take a look at these 10 characteristics of servant leadership.

The 10 characteristics of servant leadership can be summarized as follows: (by Larry Spears)

1. Listening: focus on connecting and helping people to grow.

What are the specific opportunities to practice listening that “builds strength in other people“?

2. Empathy: accept people for who they are, make your team your first priority.

What small actions can I take each day to show my team they are my priority and to help them grow?

3. Healing: help each team member lead a fulfilling and ‘purpose-full’ life.

How can I support my team members to develop their physical and mental well-being?

4. Awareness: invest time and energy in developing self-awareness as a foundation for leadership.

How can I actively work to understand my personal biases and resolve them?

5. Persuasion: understand your team members’ views and concerns, lead by example.

Do I take the time to explain the benefits: for individuals, the team and the company?

6. Conceptualization: help your team members exceed their potential.

Do I coach my team to find solutions for themselves? Do I recognize and celebrate successes?

7. Foresight: Show your team a brighter future.

Do I show my team a better future that will motivate and guide them? Do I show them how they can contribute to the journey?

8. Stewardship: Serve and help your team become servants too.

Do I call out inappropriate and unethical behavior? Does my leadership encourage my team to become servant leaders?

9. Commitment to growth of people: develop your team in their current role and in preparation for future roles.

Do I provide ongoing feedback to my team that supports their development?

10. Building community: focus on customers, build community within and between teams.

What more could we do to support the people we serve?

What more YOU do to better embody these 10 characteristics of servant leadership? Are you willing to do the work..?

Don’t miss your opportunity. Be intentional. Encourage others to do the same and watch what happens.

You got this!
