“What is the quality of your intent?”
-Thurgood Marshall
How do the words above resonate with you?
Pause here for a moment and free yourself from distractions:
Take a deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... calm your mind and be present...
Review the meaning of the word intent.
intent, noun: purpose
intent, adjective: resolved or determined to do (something).
Think about a time that something you said did not go over the way you anticipated. (…A comment to a friend or colleague, …a presentation to a group, sales pitch...)
What comes to mind?
…where were you, who were you interacting with..?
What was the reaction? Spend some time here before moving on...
…what was on you mind at the time... why did the result not go the way you had hoped...?
There is much to unpack in Thurgood Marshall’s question: “What is the quality of your intent?” (From Iyanla Vanzant's Act's of Faith)
Even when words don’t seem harsh or offensive, their impact can be shattering.
When we intend to do good we do. When we intend to do harm it happens.
Our intent always comes through.
We cannot sugarcoat the feelings in our heart of hearts. The emotion is the energy that motivates.
We cannot ignore what we really want to create.
We owe it to ourselves and everyone around us to examine the reasons of our true intent.
Remind yourself: My intent will be evident in the results.
Today’s Challenge: Reflection...
As you go through the day examine the quality of your intent...
What do you do when your intentions doesn’t match your words?...Think about that honestly...
What are the steps you can take toward self-correction? … your plan to turn this around...
Leaders: Let's learn and grow together! Share today’s message in you professional groups and with those you supervise. Hold each other accountable!
What are you willing to do? Don’t miss your opportunity!
Be intentional, encourage others to do the same and watch what happens.
You got this!
