“We appreciate the complicated and wonderful gifts you give us in each other. And we appreciate the task you put down before us, of loving each other the best we can, even as you love us.” -Because of Winn Dixie
How does the quote above resonate with you?
Pause here for a moment and free yourself from distractions: ...Take a deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... calm your mind and be present...
This post is was developed with teachers in mind... the modern day superheros . Goggle provides several interesting definitions of a superhero:
superhero | noun
a fictional character with extraordinary or superhuman powers. an exceptionally skillful or successful person.
Example: flexible and adaptable. Teachers quickly adjusted to distance learning, developed lessons, utilizing technology in ways that were unfamiliar and/or uncomfortable to continue educating students.
What exceptional skill has enabled you to be successful during this time of quarantine ans social distancing?
...think about it for a moment until you come up with an answer... don't cell yourself short...
a person whose actions or achievements are far greater than what people expect.
Example: creative and resourceful. Teachers are connecting with there students in many different ways to meet the variety of needs of their students and families. Making phone calls, answering emails, creating videos. zoom conferences and meetings.
What have you achieved over the last four weeks that was unexpected?
A being with extraordinary physical or mental powers, far beyond the range of normal human ability, who uses these powers to protect the innocent and for the general good.
Example: compassionate and caring. Teachers have established relationships with their student's parents and caregivers. Some who lost jobs and income, others who work in the trenches, on the front lines, some who are first responders during this pandemic. Teachers are standing in the gap, reassuring parents and going above and beyond to ensure student success.
How has your physical and mental strength allowed you to be of service to others during this time?
...spend some time with this one...
A hero who puts others above themselves and fights for the greater good. Generally, superheros are vigilantes, outcasted by society, yet they still make sacrifices to save their city.
Example: loving, noble, and selfless: Teachers are working tirelessly to educate students in unique and unexpected ways. Loosing sleep, keeping late hours to get it done. Let’s not forget many teachers have families and children of their own. While they're teaching and providing meaningful lessons to their students/your children, many have children of their own who are home, that they have to monitor and supervise through their school's academic schedule. Teachers run households, care for children, spouses, elder parents and others while carrying the stress and fears that all stay safe and healthy.
How have your personal sacrifices made a difference in your community?
...think about it...
A superhero is a person who does heroic deeds and has the ability to do them in a way that a normal person couldn't. So, in order to be a superhero, you need a power that is more exceptional than any power a normal human being could possess, and you need to use that power to accomplish good deeds.
I saw a t-shirt that was quite fitting:
I'm a teacher, what's your superpower?
Teachers, know you’re appreciated. Never underestimate your value. Make the shift from doing everything to survive to focusing in order to thrive.
Teachers, are you ready to shift? What will you do to honor yourself today?
How will you let teacher's know they are appreciated today?
Be intentional, encourage other to do the same and watch what happens.
You got this!
