“Greatness is not a function of circumstance. Greatness, it turns out, is largely a matter of conscious choice, and discipline.”
-Jim Collins How does the quote above resonate with you? Pause here for a moment and free yourself from distractions: ...Take a deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... calm your mind and be present... Greatness is a matter of conscious choice and discipline... do you agree?
greatness | noun the quality of being great, distinguished, or eminent.
Greatness is the quality that radiates from the inside out. It is who you are when you are honoring your values and living a life of purpose.
Honoring ones values and living a life of purpose is extremely gratifying. However, to do so is a choice, takes a tremendous amount of courage and mental strength. How important is mental strength to you?
...think about that for a moment... Mental Strength is a measure of an individuals resilience and confidence that often predicts one’s success in all areas of life.
When was the last time you thought about mental strength or intentionally given your brain a work out? ...Think about that for a moment... to strengthen a muscle, requires working out.... It will take conscious effort and disciple if you are destined for greatness. But I have no doubt that there is greatness in each of us.
What will you do to build mental strength?
...your choice... it takes discipline... are you ready..?
Start building the mental muscle you need to reach your greatest potential.
Here are 5 exercises to help strengthen your mental muscle: 1. Start and End Each Day with Gratitude: Studies show gratitude increases happiness and reduces depression. Train your brain to think differently. Take 5 minutes each morning to list as many things you can think of to be grateful for. Write them down in a journal or notebook. Do the same thing before bedtime. Develop a routine. This will also help you sleep better ending the evening on a positive note.
2. Train Yourself to Secure Your Confidence:
It starts with steady and deliberate practice and continually testing yourself to live on the edge of failure. Increase your confidence by overcoming smaller failures. Practice something you’re not good at, where you’ve had previous failures until you master it. (i.e. public speaking, a musical instrument, a new sport, or learning a new language.) 3. Embrace Your Sense of Duty:
Simply tell yourself, “It’s my job.” Write down a “job description” for all the different hats you wear in your life. Not just for your work, but in the other roles you fulfill (i.e. spouse, parent, mentor, supervisor, etc.). Tape these descriptions in a place where you will see them often or keep them in a notebook and review them weekly. No matter your different responsibilities, treat them like duties. Remember your duty is to get the gob done.
4. Do What You Do For Your Team:
Whose on your team? Fight for each other, rather than any larger principle or purpose.
Write down the names of your trusted teammates — it could be your family, colleagues, or friends. Under each name, write down two things you can do to strengthen your bond with that person. Work to surround yourself with people who you trust and care for, and you’ll be more likely to endure during times of challenge.
5. Find Pride on the Inside:
Today’s culture is filled with awards and rewards. You get a trophy just for being on the team. The fact is, you don’t need a ribbon or a certificate to take pride in yourself and your accomplishments. Write down a list of all the things you are proud of in your life, especially things you’ve never been recognized for by others. Notice the satisfaction you feel from your accomplishments and worthy traits, and realize you don’t need the validation of others for them to be real. Take pride internally.
I challenge you to make a commitment to yourself:
Choose to be great!
Honor your values and live your purpose.
Plan: Make mental workouts a priority. Develop new routines.
Feed your soul with gratitude.
Start today! Be intentional, encourage others to do the same and watch what happens.
