“When I was in nursery school, the teachers asked me, y'know, 'What does your dad do for a living?' So I said 'He helps women get pregnant!' They called my mom and they were like, 'What exactly does your husband do?'”
-Natalie Portman
Good Morning:
I hope you’re laughing...
How does the quote above resonate with you?
Pause here for a moment, and free yourself from distraction:
...Take a deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... calm your mind and be present...
Think back to your early childhood school years...
What memories do you have from back then?
...think about it... especially the stories that parents often repeat a family gatherings... some embarrassing....
Who was your favorite teacher during your K-3 years?
...is there one that stands out..?
What qualities made that teacher special?
...spend some time right here and put your thoughts into words...
Teachers are special people for many reasons. We wouldn't be anywhere if it wasn't for a teacher... As schools close and schedules change, while the country prepares to combat the spread of the corona-virus, think about our teachers....
We forget sometimes that many of our teachers have children and families of their own and are tasked with making the needed adjustments to care for them, while at the same time preparing lessons for their students, developing and adapting to new ways to communicate with students, parents, and their district leaders.
Teachers, in my book are superheros! Highly skilled and influential leaders that pour into their students daily. The Global Digital Citizen organization describes a teacher's essential skills many of us may take for granted. Check them out:
6 Essential Modern Teacher Skills: (by Lee Watanabe-Crockett)
1. Adaptability: It is necessary to be flexible. Great teachers know how to roll with the punches and face challenges. Administrators are constantly updating and revising guidelines and expectations.
2. A Desire to Learn: Learning is a lifelong process. There is always something to learn and something to think about when you're a teacher. As the world landscape changes, so does the teaching and learning landscape.
3. Confidence: The benefits of having this skill are immeasurable. A confident person inspires confidence in others and influences people for the better.
4. A Knack for Teamwork: Networking and solving problems together means success for everyone. Collaborating with students, colleagues, and administrators is the norm for teachers. Practicing and teaching this skill is undeniably crucial.
5. An Empowering Nature: This is a gift to others. It encompasses an ability to turn negatives into positives, having compassion, inspiring students, colleagues, and parents, showing leadership and initiative. It is a forward thinking attitude with love at the very core....
6. A Global Mindset: Technology has broken down many barriers. Educators are able to show students how to both "connect and protect" in the digital age. Educators know how to use technology safely, are aware of online dangers and help students understand and manage them.
Today's Challenge: Reach out to one of the superheros/teachers in your life. Let them know you appreciate them!
Mail them a letter, send an email or have your child write a personal note or draw a picture,
Great way to start a conversation with your children if you're home with them. Ask them about their teacher and what they like most about them.
If you don't have children, reach out to a teacher that made an impact on you in some way. I am positive they'd love to hear from you.
Be intentional and watch what happens. Encourage others to do the same.
What will you do to let a teacher know you appreciate them?
...think about it and make it happen...
You git this!
