Carol Mosley Braun was the first female African-American Senator, The first African-American US Senator for the Democratic Party, the first woman to defeat an incumbent US Senator in an election, and the first female Senator from Illinois. In fact, Braun was the only female US Senator from Illinois until 2017.
Braun attended the University of Illinois at Chicago where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and later earned a JD from the University of Chicago Law School.
Braun began her legal career as a prosecutor in the US Attorney's office in Chicago. She served there from 1073 to 1977 and worked primarily in the civil and appellate law areas. Her work in housing, health policy, and environmental law won her the Attorney General's Special Achievement Award.
Braun served Illinois 24th district as Member of the House of Representatives from 1979 to 1983 and continued as Member of the House of Representatives serving Illinois 25th district from 1983 to 1988.
In addition, Carol Mosley Braun was the US Ambassador to New Zealand from 1999 to 2001 and was a candidate for the Democratic nomination in the 2004 presidential election, and campaigned for Mayor of Chicago in November of 2010.
