Thursday's Thoughts

Tavia Robinson

“Motivation gets you going, but discipline keeps you growing.”

-John C. Maxwell

How do the words above resonate with you?

Pause here for a moment and free yourself from distractions:

Take a deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... calm your mind and be present...

What does self-discipline mean to you? Your personal definition of the word...

self-discipline /noun/:

  • the ability to control one's feelings and overcome one's weaknesses

  • the ability to pursue what one thinks is right despite temptations to abandon it

  • correction or regulation of oneself for the sake of improvement

Reading Iyanla Vanzant's, Until Today: Daily Devotions for Spiritual Growth and Peace of Mind yesterday, focused my attention to the subject on discipline. The author shares:

Discipline magically leads to results in your life.
Discipline helps you plan.
Discipline helps you stay on the path to what you are planning.
Only when you are disciplined will you follow through on what you are thinking.
Only when you are disciplined will you Coach yourself through all your actions.
Only when you are disciplined can you capture the magic of your spirit and put it into action in your life.
Discipline cannot be forced upon you. It must be developed.

Today’s Affirmation: from Iyanla Vanzant’s, Until Today...

I am developing the discipline I need to make something magical happen in my life!

If you want to develop self-discipline, John C Maxwell shares these action steps to consider: from the book The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader:

1. Develop and Follow Your Priorities: If you can determine what’s really a priority and release yourself from everything else, it’s a lot easier to follow through on what’s important.

Think of 2-3 areas of life are most important . Write them down, along with areas you must develop to keep growing and improving. Develop a plan to to make the disciplines a daily or weekly part of your life.

2. Make a Disciplined Lifestyle Your Goal: List the benefits of practicing the disciplines you named above. Post the benefits where you will see them daily.

3. Challenge Your Excuses: Write down every reason why you might not be able to follow through. Dismiss them as the excuses they are. Even if a reason seems legitimate, find a solution to overcome it.

4. Remove Rewards Until the Job Is Done: If you lack self-discipline, you may be in the habit of having dessert before eating your vegetables. Create habits aligned to your goals and values.

5. Stay Focused on Results: The next you’re facing a must-do task and you’re thinking of doing what’s convenient instead of paying the price, change your focus. Count the benefits of doing what’s right, and then dive in.

“The best time to plant a tree is twenty-five years ago... The second best time is today.”

-John C Maxwell

Plant the tree of self-discipline in your life today.

What are you willing to do?

Don’t miss your opportunity! Be intentional, encourage others to do the same and watch what happens.

You got this!
