Thursday's Thoughts

Tavia Robinson

“To men and women who want to do things, there is nothing quite so driving as the force of an imprisoned ego.... All genius comes from this class.”

-Mary Roberts Rinehart

How do the words above resonate with you?

Pause here for a moment and free yourself from distractions:

Take a deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... calm your mind and be present...

When was the last time you checked up on your ego? Think about that for a moment...

It’s easy to check the egos of others but checking on our own ego is the challenge. For humans, It’s simply is not natural.

ego /noun/:

-a person's sense of self-esteem or self-importance

-the part of the mind that mediates between the conscious and the unconscious and is responsible for reality testing and a sense of personal identity.

Reading Iyanla Vanzant’s, Until Today: Daily Devotions for Spiritual Growth and Peace of Mind, inspired this focus on ego. Vanzant presents a powerful perspective:

The ego is taking a pretty bad rap!
It is the ego that inspires you...
Without ego, you could not make steps toward self-improvement, self-development or self-empowerment.
The ego is the little self that desires to become the Self-filled and fulfilled by the truth.
It is only when the ego is left to its own devices... and not influenced by self-discipline and the Spirit within that it becomes a problem.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate your ego strength? Take a deep dive... Spend some time with this question...

For a frame of reference to measure your ego strength, take a look at the article below.

Characteristics of Ego Strength:

by Kendra Cherry, verywellmind.com

Ego is the aspect of personality that must strike a balance between these baser urges, moral standards, and the demands of reality.

When it comes to mental well-being, ego strength is often used to describe an individual's ability to maintain their identity and sense of self in the face of pain, distress, and conflict. Acquiring new defenses and coping mechanisms is an important component of ego strength.

High ego strength: These people can handle whatever life throws at them without losing their sense of self.

  • confident in ones ability to deal with challenges

  • good at coming up with solutions to life's problems

  • high levels of emotional intelligence

  • able to successfully regulate emotions, even in tough situations

An individual with solid ego-strength approaches challenges with a sense that he or she can overcome the problem and even grow as a result.

Low ego strength: To these individuals, reality can seem too overwhelming to deal with.

  • View challenges as something to avoid

  • Lack psychological resilience

  • In the face of challenges, give up or break down.

Individuals with low ego strength struggle to cope in the face of problems and may try to avoid reality through wishful thinking, substance use, and fantasies.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

-Aristotle

Where is your opportunity for growth? Your choice, create good habits...
