Thursday's Thoughts

Tavia Robinson

“You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude

toward what happens to you, and in that, you will be mastering change rather

than allowing it to master you.”

-Brian Tracy

How do the words above resonate with you?

Pause here for a moment and free yourself from distractions:

Take a deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... calm your mind and be present...

Are you a control freak? Think about that for a moment... May not be as easy as yes or no...

control freak /noun/

  • someone who is determined to make things happen in exactly the way they want and who tries to make other people do what they want.

What is the focus of your control? Sit with this question... Dig deep...

Reading Iyanla Vanzant’s Until Today: Daily Devotions for Spiritual Growth and Peace of Mind, inspired this examination of control.

control:

  • noun: the power to influence or direct people's behavior or the course of events.

  • verb: determine the behavior or supervise the running of.

Vanzant explains:

You must understand the tricks of the trade employed by control so that you can stop yourself when you use them.
Control is in control when:
You are fighting to prove you are right...
You will lie to prove you are right...
You have a need to be right...
You are yelling in order to be heard...
You won’t say anything believing you won’t be heard...
The only view that makes sense is yours...
The only thing that matters is what matters to you...
You are still giving reasons why after someone has said no...
You think if someone gets what they want or need you will not get what you want or need.
You jump on someone’s case to keep them off your case...
You believe someone can or will hurt you and you are trying to avoid it.

How is control impacting your life... how is it serving you?

“The way to change this habit is by noticing when you’re doing it, by giving yourself love, and then reminding yourself that the only thing you can control in the world is yourself and your own thoughts,” -Victoria Albina

Today’s Challenge: from Iyanla Vanzant’s book Until Today...

Be devoted to becoming aware of the things you do to obtain and maintain control.

What are you willing to do?

Don’t miss your opportunity! Be intentional, encourage others to do the same and watch what happens.

You got this!
