Thursday's Thoughts

Tavia Robinson

“You must never be stupid enough to say, or smart enough to admit, you “know” what somebody else is talking about. The moment you do, your learning stops.”

-Awo Osun Kunle

How do the words above resonate with you?

Pause here and free yourself from distractions:

Take a deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... calm your mind and be present...

Reread the quote above.

When was the last time your response to someone was, “I know.”? Think about that for a moment... Call to mind the situation...

Perhaps there is a better question to examine. Recall a time someone said to you, “I know.” Think about where you were and what the circumstance and topic of discussion was...

What went through your mind the moment you heard, “I know.”? Dig deep and reflect on that memory...

How did their words make you feel? Think about your initial thoughts...

Reading Iyana Vanzant ‘s Acts of Faith this morning provided an interesting lesson on ego and how it often gets in our way.

ego /noun/

a person's sense of self-esteem or self-importance.

The ego encourages you to constantly prove yourself and what you already know. The automatic response is l know.

Conversely:

When you are in the presence of someone your ego believes is not as smart, rich, or experienced I know is the way to cut them off.

Bottom line...

You can learn something valuable from everyone, in every situation.

Understand: “The moment you say I know you are demonstrating that you don’t know.”

-Iyanla Vanzant

Today’s Challenge: Be open and willing to learn!

(Inspired by Iyanla Vanzant's Acts of Faith)

As you approach this day:

  • Intentionally check your ego at the door.

  • Avoid temptation of responding with "I know"

  • Be willing to say or admit to yourself, “I don’t know.”

  • Listen intently to others... learn from other’s experiences.

At the end of your day: REFLECT What did you learn from others today? Think about it...

“The ego is the single biggest obstruction to the achievement of anything.”

What are you willing to do?

Don’t miss your opportunity. Be intentional. Encourage others to do the same and watch what happens.

You got this!
