Thursday's Thoughts

Tavia Robinson

“The first rule of holes: When you’re in one, stop digging.”

-M. Ivins, Columnist

How do the words above resonate with you?

Pause here for a moment and free yourself from distractions:

Take a deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... calm your mind and be present...

What Ivins’ quote is referring to is discernment. A quality successful leaders work to master.

discernment: /noun/

putting an end to unsolved mysteries, the ability to judge well, the quality of being able to grasp and comprehend what is obscure

This game of life is not always easy. We are faced with many situations that test our strength and abilities. Much of which is unexpected and out of our control.

How discerning are you?

Think about that for a moment... take time to come up with an answer.

When you find yourself in a tough position, how do you determine when to stop digging? Spend some time here...

Remember, the only thing you can control in the moment is how you respond...

**This reminder from Iyanla Vanzant is a compelling lesson:

The rules of the game of life are quite simple.
Always tell the truth.
Never live in fear of anything or anyone.
Be conscious of what you are thinking so that you can always think positively.
Do everything that you do for the love of doing it.
If you devote yourself, your time and your energy to following these rules, have no doubt... you cannot lose!

*To improve your discernment, here are a few suggestions from John C. Maxwell:

  • Analyze your past successes: What enabled you to be successful?

  • Learn how others think: What Leaders do you admire? Pick one from your profession and read their biography.

  • Listen to your gut: Think back to a time when your intuition spoke to you... how many times have you ignored that gut feeling...?

“...One discernment driven decision can change the entire course of your destiny...”

Today's Challenge: Commit to improving your discernment!

  • Revisit The Rules of the Game of life above and remind yourself: The only thing I can control at any given moment is how I respond.

  • Make time to the work that Maxwell suggests to improve your discernment: When you find yourself in a tough position, take a deep breath, maintain a positive mindset, and trust your gut!

  • Share this information in your professional circles, choose an accountability partner. Learn and grow together!

How will you work on improving your discernment? What are you willing to do..?

Don’t miss your opportunity . Be intentional, encourage others to do the same and watch what happens.

You got this!
