"Judgement is discernment on a bad hair day"

How do the words above resonate with you?

Pause here for a moment and free yourself from distractions:

Take a deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... calm your mind and be present...

Do you think you are usually more judgmental or more discerning?

...Think about that for a moment...

judgement | noun the ability to make considered decisions or come to sensible conclusions.

Judgement is also known as adjudication which means the evaluation of evidence to make a decision. Judgement is also the ability to make considered decisions... opinions expressed as facts.

discernment | noun the ability to judge well.

perception in the absence of judgment with a view to obtaining spiritual guidance and understanding.

Discernment is the ability to obtain sharp perceptions or to judge well. In the case of judgement, discernment can be psychological, moral or aesthetic in nature. Within judgment, discernment involves going past the mere perception of something and making nuanced judgments about its properties or qualities.

Discernment vs judgement how would you articulate the difference between the two?

Spend some time here...

For centuries, societies have represented the concept of justice as being fair, balanced, and unbiased through the figure of a woman, Lady Justice, who wears a blindfold to communicate these virtues. But another way to look at the blindfold is that it signifies the administration of justice through oblivion, with eyes shut. Lady Justice is not just objective. She is also subjective. Laws change as people change.
Of course, every generation seems to consider itself to be the enlightened generation… the generation that finally got discernment right.

In an article posted on medium.com Michael Mammas, asked the reader to consider the following questions they evaluate their own perspective on judgement vs discernment:

  1. What molds your viewpoint?

  2. What are you justifying with your intellect?

  3. Do you place your thumb on the scale of your own inner justice? What preconceived notions or biases are clouding your vision?

  4. Are you wearing a blindfold of subjectivity?

In the present political environment, protesting for social justice, and fighting to end a systemic system of racial inequality, how do we move forward without spending time with the questions above..?

I challenge you to do some self analysis and start those conversations.

What are you willing to do?

Don’t miss your opportunity! Be intentional, encourage others to do the same and watch what happens.

You got this!
