"We have two ears and one mouth and we should use them proportionally."
-Susan Cain, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a world that Can't Stop Talking
Good Morning Leaders,
Cain's quote and the title of her book made me laugh this morning. The title itself is what lured me in and after a quick glance and review, I actually purchased the book.
How does the above quote resonate with you?
Imagine living in a world where people actually listened to each other... Think about that for a moment... What would that even look like... How would that change things..?
Pause right here... Take a deep breath in... exhale slowly... repeat three times... calm your mind and be present...
Are you really listening to others... what's your intention? Think about that...
Gay Hendricks speaks about "conscious listening" in his book Conscious Living. He explains:
Some people listen to find fault with the speaker
Others listen with the "What's in it for me?" intention
Many listen to rebut, argue, or debate
Conscious Listening is different:
1. Listening for Accuracy: to make sure you understand exactly what the person is saying.
2. Listening for Feeling: to resonate with the emotion, if any, under the words is the person angry... sad...
"Many times what people need is not a brilliant mind that speaks, but a special heart that listens."
On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your conscious listening?
Today's Challenge: When people speak to you today, put your "conscious listening" skills to the test. Listen for accuracy and feeling/emotion:
Use phrases like, "If I understand you correctly, you're saying __________ "
"It sounds like you felt __________ (hurt, sad, angry...)"
Avoid giving opinions or advice. Just listen so intently that people bring fourth their own wisdom.
Be intentional and watch what happens...
