Thursday's Thoughts

Coach Tavia

"Nothing is a greater impediment to being on good terms with others than being ill at ease with yourself."

Good Morning Leaders,

How secure are you as a leader?

Interesting question if you think about it. I'm sure most of us in leadership positions wouldn't question it. Security, number 17 of John C. Maxwell's The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader raises that very question. "Competence never compensates for insecurity."

Take a deep breath and sit with that thought for a moment... It takes a secure person to be successful as a leader.

Qualities of a Secure leader:

1. They are able to believe in others because they believe in themselves. People without security can't make others feel secure.

2. When their people perform well they don't feel threatened.

3. They go out of their way to bring the best people together and then build them up. Only secure leaders give power to others.

4. The highest compliment he can receive for his leadership ability is when his team succeeds. A secure leader has no problem recognizing the talents of the members of his team.

How will you improve your security as a leader?

1. Know yourself- Intentionally become more self-aware. Ask people who know you well to name three of your greatest talents and three of your weaknesses... reflect on the information you gather. Have you recognized your weaknesses and accepted the ones you can't change?

How well do you understand and respect yourself?

2. Give away the credit- If you assist others and acknowledge their contributions, you help their careers, lift morale, and improve the organization. That's what an effective leader does.

When a member of your team has a great idea do you support it or suppress it?

3. Get some help- Insecurity could be limiting you, your team and your organization. If you cannot overcome feelings of insecurity on your own, seek professional help. Getting to the root of the problem with benefit the people you lead as well as yourself.

What's your plan to become a more secure leader?

You got this!
