“Not everything that appears to be broken needs to be fixed. In fact, some of us are strong at the broken places!”

-Ernest Hemingway

How do the words above resonate with you?

Pause here and free yourself from distractions:

Take a deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... calm your mind and be present...

What area(s) of your life have you been trying to fix?

Would you classify yourself as a perfectionist?

perfectionist /noun/

a person who refuses to accept any standard short of perfection.

perfection /noun/

the condition, state, or quality of being free or as free as possible from all faults or defects.

How has the quest for perfection served you? Sit with this questions and allow yourself time to reflect...

Iyanla Vanzant States:

The quest for perfection is a waste of time and energy.
You can be so preoccupied perfecting the cracks in you that you fail to realize that light comes through the cracks.

Think about Vanzant's statement... It rings quite true...

Today’s Affirmation: (from Iyanla Vanzant's "Until Today")

I am devoted to releasing the quest to be any more perfect that I am!

Research shows, perfectionism is linked to depression in individuals. For teams, it can get in the way of progress as projects are never quite good enough to move forward. For organizations, an overemphasis on perfection can result in paralysis and the inability to innovate. (Forbes, Feb.2 2020)

Seek excellence not perfection! Forbes Magazine offers these 4 steps to get started.

Perfection Versus Excellence: 4 Ways To Ensure Perfectionism Doesn’t Prevent Progress (by Tracy Bower, Forbes)

1. Seek Stretch: Seek out experiences in which you are not already competent. Find opportunities to test your skills and push hard enough that you fail sometimes. Learning cannot occur without failure.

2. Find Feedback: You need to know how you’re doing, and perhaps most importantly, how you can do better. Use feedback as stepping stones to build skills and talents.

3. Trust Yourself: A perfectionist attitude is self-defeating. A growth mindset suggests you can always build your skills, get better and strive for more. Be kind to yourself and trust yourself to stretch for the next big step.

4. Plan for Evolution: Have a mindset where improvement is the norm. Plan to review, iterate and apply new thinking. Include a system for continuous improvements to pursue excellence.

“Seek stretch, find feedback, trust yourself and plan for evolution so you can be brilliant, even if you’re not perfect.” -Tracy Bower

Now, what are you willing to do?

Don’t miss your opportunity. Be intentional. Encourage others to do the same and watch what happens.

You got this!
