Monday Madness:

“Fun is one of the most important – and underrated – ingredients in any successful venture. If you’re not having fun, then it’s probably time to call it quits and try something else.” – Richard Branson

How do the words above resonate with you?

Pause here for a moment and free yourself from distractions:

Take a deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... calm your mind and be present...

Reading Gay Hendricks this morning reminded me to take having fun more seriously.

On a scale of 1-10, how important is having fun to you?

Think about that for a moment...

Why do many of us subscribe to the belief that seriousness and suffering are the hallmarks of personal growth and success?

Merriam Webster defines fun this way: (Merriam-webster.com)

fun /noun/

  • what provides amusement or enjoyment, specifically : playful often boisterous action or speech

  • a mood for finding or making amusement

“You gotta have fun. Regardless of how you look at it, we’re playing a game. It’s a business, it’s our job, but I don’t think you can do well unless you’re having fun.” – Derek Jeter

Why not have fun while we work?... These ideas from Entrepreneur might help.

7 Ways to Create Fun and A Positive Work Culture: (entrepreneur.com)

1. Recognize milestones and achievements: Letting people know they are important is one of the biggest components to a thriving, concierge-style culture.

2. Meetings employees look forward to:

  • Every week to praise wins, discuss ideas and explore ways to keep improving services. Empower employees to participate in discussions that help the company grow. This fosters accountability and leadership.

  • Before each meeting, grab a bite together and enjoy a catered lunch from favorite local food spots.

3. Make social media social again: Though we use social accounts to market business, we also make them about the team. Use social media to engage engage clients and team members.

  • Post facts to chew on: (Did you know the Earth receives more energy from the sun in an hour than the entire world uses in one year?)

  • Post questions that get people talking (If you could move anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?).

4. Sometimes, you have to cut loose: Consider making a spoof video:

Filming can make for a great teambuilding activity and make everyone from employees to clients and partners smile!

  • Dance to “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. for example, or any other motivational tune that inspires you...

  • Post on your social media platforms

5. Play to win: Lots of our employees are sports fans. Embrace the love of the game as something to make work extra exciting:

  • Have two fantasy football teams that huddle up at the end of every summer to form teams and make picks.

  • Track Progress on a board throughout the season so everyone can catch the fever and watch for who’s winning.

  • Fantasy leagues are an easy way to bring workers together, encourage a team spirit that’s contagious throughout the workplace and give people something to look forward to. Best of all, the total cost of starting a fantasy league is $0.

6. Spotlight partners with special company cultures: Amazing culture is inspiring!

  • When you meet a group or organization that has a unique or interesting work environment, spotlight them on your social media pages: (Examples: sleek offices, a game room, interesting event...)

7. Get out of the office—together: Planning company events gives the team something to look forward to. Examples:

  • golf tournament

  • Rooted for the home team at football games

  • Chow down at food truck parties

  • Hit the pavement in charity runs/walks

  • Don't forget the occasional, filmed spoof video.

Today’s Challenge: Determine for yourself what fun is, and discover ways to incorporate more fun into your life.

Leaders: Share in your professional groups and build fun into your work culture.

“Don’t take life too seriously! Nobody gets out alive anyway. Smile. Be goofy. Take chances. Have fun. Inspire.”― Dawn Gluskin
