“ Our relationship with technology is the ultimate paradox: the same devices that create opportunities for connection and convenience also sap our time and attention.”
-Arianna Huffington
How does the quote above resonate with you?
Pause here for a moment and free yourself from distractions:
Take a deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... calm your mind and be present...
Reread the quote above:
What are some ways technology negatively impacts your well-being, productivity, and relationships?
Take out a piece of paper, take two minutes and jot down your answer. (...be honest with yourself...)
Think about the answers to these questions:
How long can you be away from your phone... your computer? (think about it seriously...)
On average, how many times a day do you look at your phone, check social media, text messages, or emails..? ( 5X, 10X, too many to count..?)
When do you unplug/disconnect from work? (at the end of the work day, weekends, never...)
When you are out with friends, socializing, where is your phone? (in your pocket, pocketbook, hand, on the table..?
When you are talking to someone face-to-face or on the phone, how often do you allow yourself to be interrupted? (...by another call, text, notification, or alert?)
When you were interrupted, was it urgent, or could it have waited? (be honest was it life or death..?)
Leaders, we have to do better. In reading "Your Time to Thrive: End burnout, increase well-being, and unlock your full potential with the new science of Microsteps," this morning, I was reminded:
When we don’t set boundaries with technology, we pay a price
There’s a collective delusion that burnout is simply the price we must pay for success.
According to World Health Organization, burnout stems directly from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.
In this technological age, we can't do away with technology all together. It does serve a purpose and has made life more coinvent for us all. But what we can do is choose to set some healthy boundaries.
Microsteps: Just suggestions....
Turn off notifications except from those that need to reach you.
Schedule time on your calendar for something that matters to you— outside of work.
*Put your phone away each time you socialize with friends or family. Be present! (*This one is a personal pet peeve of mine!... just saying!)
When you take Paid Time Off, shut off your email, calendar, and chat notifications.
Each night, turn on Night Mode to make your phone’s display easier on the eyes.
Today's Challenge: Commit to setting healthy boundaries with technology. Start today! For those you love,.. For those you lead... For yourself!
What are you willing to do?
Be intentional, encourage others to do the same and watch what happens.
You got this!
