“And I'll rise up
I'll rise like the day
I'll rise up
I'll rise unafraid
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousand times again
And I'll rise up
High like the waves
I'll rise up
In spite of the ache
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousands times again”
-From Andra Day’s song “Rise Up”
How do the words above resonate with you?
Pause here for a moment and free yourself from distractions:
Take a deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... calm your mind and be present...
What is your motivation?
Your "why"... why anything matters... think about that for a moment...
This morning I stumbled across Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs:
1. At the top of the top of the pyramid is Self-Fulfillment Needs, self-actualization, achieving ones full potential including creative activities.
What is your passion, your special gift, the thing you personally lights your fire?
2. The middle of the pyramid is ones Psychological Needs which includes: Esteem Needs: feeling of accomplishment, and Belonging and Love Needs: referring to intimate relationships and friends.
How connected are you with others?
friends... family...
3. The bottom of the pyramid, the foundation, are ones Basic Needs: Security Needs: Security and safety, and Physiological Needs: which includes food, water, warmth, rest.
How safe and secure do you feel?
...Think about your living arrangement, food/shelter for your family....
The premise of Maslow’s hierarchy is that you won’t be able to reach the top of the pyramid, Self-Fulfillment, true Self-Actualization if first your Basic Needs: Physiological and Security aren’t met.
Where are you in your own hierarchy of needs?
...Think about that... spend some time soul searching... dig past just a surface answer...
In these emotionally charged times, it’s important for all of us to take a breath, reassess, and remember our "why"... in order to move this mountain and continue the fight to end the system of oppression infecting this country.
“Great things are done when men and mountains meet.”
-William Blake
What are you willing to do?
Don’t miss your opportunity. Be intentional, encourage others to do the same and watch what happens.
You got this!
