“We have rejected our own culture and traditions, yet without investigation we accept the world of others as truth.”
-Iyanla Vanzant
How do the words above resonate with you?
Pause here for a moment and free yourself from distractions:
Take a deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... deep breath in... exhale slowly... calm your mind and be present...
How do you define truth? Your definition, kindly formulate an answer in your mind before reading on.
truth /noun/
from merriam-webster.com
the body of real things, events, and facts: ACTUALITY
the state of being the case: FACT
a transcendent fundamental or spiritual reality
the property (as of a statement) of being in accord with fact or reality
sincerity in action, character, and utterance
What’s your personal truth? Think about that for a moment... How would you articulate that...
On a scale of 1 to 10, how open are you to additional possibilities and other perspectives? Spend some time with your thoughts... dig a little deeper
In the book Acts of Faith, Iyanla Vanzant states:
When we close any portion of our minds, we close off part of the world.
What would you like to learn and how can you begin? What are you curious about..?
I never would have imagined that truth would cause so much controversy. I was raised to believe truth is the always the best answer. Truth is positive. You can’t go wrong if you are speaking the truth.
Why do you think truth evokes such strong emotions (often fear, hesitation) in others?
Be honest with yourself... your fears... what's you "why"... your hesitation..?
Gay Hendricks, Psychologist, writer, and teacher in the field of personal growth and relationships speaks on this topic, The Dangerous Truth:
The idea of telling the truth seems dangerous to many people, but it is actually only dangerous if you resist it.
One of the big delusions of life is thinking we have control over how other people feel.
In marriage, politics, and life in general, this move inevitably leads to disaster.
“If you want to have a healthy mind, you must feed your mind with truth.”
—Rick Warren
What truth are you resisting? Take time to think about this question...
What excuses have you given to justify not telling the truth? knowledge is power...
“No one can give you wisdom. You must discover it for yourself on the journey through life, which no one can take for you.” -Sun Bear
Today's Challenge: The Simple Truth
from Gay Hendricks, A Year of Living Consciously
*As you go through the day, you will have opportunities to tell the truth or hide it, to hear the truth or shield yourself from it.
PAUSE here and set your intention:
I will be open to getting comfortable dealing with the truth.
Go for it! Experiment with truth-telling. Consider using this template as a door opener to start a truthful conversation:
I feel. __pressured__ when __it's crowded __to__ blank __. Do you ever feel that way?
Speak your truth simply, and leave room in the conversation for others to do so.
“To reach that end goal you and I must be willing to be straightforward with one another. We must be willing and prepared to stare at ourselves in the mirror and speak the truth.”
-Mark Devro, self-help coach
What are you willing to do?
Don’t miss your opportunity! Be intentional, encourage others to do the same and watch what happens.
You got this!
