“I know, up on top you are seeing great sights;  But down at the bottom we too, should have rights.”

-Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories

How do the words above resonate with you?

Pause here for a moment and free yourself from distractions: ..Take a deep breath in...  exhale slowly...  deep breath in...  exhale slowly...  deep breath in...  exhale slowly...  calm your mind and be present...

Theodor Seuss Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss. was an American children's author, political cartoonist, illustrator, poet, animator, screenwriter, and filmmaker. He is known for his work writing and illustrating more than 60 books under the pen name, Dr. Seuss. His work includes many of the most popular children's books of all time, selling over 600 million copies and being translated into more than 20 languages by the time of his death. Suess’ books are known to express his views on a remarkable variety of social and political issues.  The 1958 Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories, where the above quote was taken from, expresses the authors views about Hitler and anti-authoritarianism.

"A revolution that is based on people exercising creativity in the midst of devastation is one of the great historical contributions of mankind."

-Grace Lee Boggs, Philosopher and Social Activist

If you were to write a book about this country’s current leader and political climate, what would your title be? ...think about that for a moment... be creative...

How would the story end?

...fairy tale ending... happy... open ending... cliff hanger..?

What would the moral of your story be?

What lesson would you hope the reader learns..? Thought provoking questions are designed to spark interesting conversation, inspire self-discovery, empowerment and happiness. Topics about racial oppression and inequality can often be uncomfortable.  At the same time, most would agree these conversations need to be had. Consider having friendly discussions with family, friends, even your children as a way to talk about these sometimes uncomfortable issues. You might be surprised at what you learn from and about each other. Here are 5 questions to get the conversation started:

1. How many human rights do you think are fully observed in this country? In the world?

2. Why do you think it is so difficult to apply/comply with the basic human rights?

3. Should the right to free speech be unconditional, or should there be limitations on the right to free speech?

4. If humanity was put on trial by an advanced race of aliens, how would you defend humanity and argue for its continued existence?

5. What’s the difference between justice and revenge?

“We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.”

– Martin Luther King Jr.

Don’t miss your opportunity.  Be intentional, encourage others to do the same and watch what happens. You got this! Coach Tavia
